Asegurar las señales de su negocio

3/30/2020

Picture

Insuring Your Business Signs

Business signs tell their customers their name, address, hours of operation and so on. Signs may be simple or complex and many businesses typically use lighted signs. The Sign policy created by Insurance Services Office is available to insure against the loss or destruction of signs, including fluorescent, neon, automatic or mechanical sign. Coverage also extends to lamps. However, fixed, non-lighted signs (such as billboards) are not eligible under a sign policy, even if they are illuminated by separate electric lights.

A policy requires that, in order to be covered, each sign must be specifically described including lettering information, the sign's location and coverage amount (limit). If the business buying the coverage wants to reduce its coverage cost by using a deductible, it has to accept one equal to 5% of the applicable coverage limit.
Example: An insured’s Sign policy has a limit of $10,000 and a 5% deductible applies. Later, the insured files a loss and the insurer determines total damages of $1,329. Because of the deductible and limit, the insured is paid $829 ($1,329 - $500 [10,000 X 5%]).

The policy protects against any risk of tangible damage that is not excluded or limited in the coverage form. Some of the events that could cause loss that is not covered include:
  • Governmental Action - such as property seized by authorities for emergency use
  • Nuclear Hazard
  • War and Military Action
  • Consequential (indirect) loss - such as a storm destroys a source of power and a company's sign can't be lit for several weeks
  • Any breakage that occurs during transportation, installation, repairing or dismantling
  • Dishonest acts - such as a custom sign made of expense, in-laid glass panels is stolen by an employee of the covered business
  • Short-circuiting or electrical surges
  • Tricks or fraud - such as crooks take the sign by posing as municipal electrical inspectors
The size, geographic location and specific location are all elements that an insurance company would study before deciding whether to provide sign coverage. The larger the sign, the more potential damage can occur. Signs that are located away from the main premises are more vulnerable to vandalism and theft. Signs are very easily damaged by windstorm and hail so geographic considerations must be made.

If your business has made a significant investment in its electric signs, be sure that they are properly covered. Our agency can help you make sure of it.

Smart renters purchase insurance coverage

Last year came with a wide range of tremendous disasters ranging from extreme weather to tornadoes, which brought the importance of insurance coverage to the attention of many renters who didn’t think that they needed this protection.
Unfortunately, all too many renters discovered that they were wrong when they assumed that their landlords’ policies would cover them, as well. The reality, though, is that the landlords’ policies extend only to the protection of the building itself, and not the contents of the units.
Renters’ insurance, also known as contents insurance, provides coverage against extreme weather, such as heavy rain and snow, wind, and lightning, as well as from damage due to vandalism, smoke, fire, and theft.
Furthermore, the standard policy also includes liability protection, so that the policyholder will be covered for legal expenses if anyone is ever injured while in the home and sues. The standard liability coverage is generally up to $100,000.
The coverage provided by renters’ insurance also frequently includes living expenses if you need to stay somewhere else while repairs are made to the apartment, or while you find a new place to live if the home has been entirely destroyed, such as in the case of a fire.
Our agency is unique because it does not simply stick to one kind of insurance provider but brings the clients the best deals from many different insurance carriers. In this way, clients have access to offers from multiple carriers all in one place.
So, let us do the searching for you for free! Call our office for a Quick Quote or visit our website for all your insurance needs.

Divorcio y consideraciones de seguro

3/23/2020

Picture

Divorce and Insurance Considerations

3/23/2020

Picture
Since nearly half of all marriages fail, divorce is unfortunately very real for many people. Couples face the difficult task of separating emotionally and financially. This has insurance implications as well. Legal and financial advice will be critical, particularly if there are children involved. Divorce can have a serious impact on one’s credit standing, both in terms of dividing joint debt that exists at the time of divorce and expenses that come with starting over. Paying close attention to existing obligations and monitoring credit reports at this time is critically important.
AUTO
A divorced couple will need to decide who gets which car. A change in car ownership will mean a change in insurance. Let your insurance company know about a change of address; who will now be driving the car; and any change in the type or amount of driving that will be done. These details will have an effect on your insurance premium. If someone needs to buy a new car, new insurance will need to be arranged before the car is registered. Removing a former spouse from the insurance policy also protects you from possible liability if they are involved in an accident and get sued.
HOME
Divorce will mean a change of address for one or both parties. The insurer needs to know when there is a change in residence and property coverage. For example, if one party leaves and receives the jewelry in the divorce settlement, the insurer will need to know whether to cancel any special coverage for expensive jewelry. Likewise, if security modifications are made to the home, because one party is now living alone, tell the insurance company. Those security upgrades may qualify for a discounted rate. If moving from a owner occupied home to a rental property, consider getting renter’s insurance to cover personal possessions and liability.
We invite you to contact our agency to discuss your options during this very trying time in your life.

How to Protect Your Home From Water Damage

3/20/2020

Picture
Water damage is one of the most common and costly disasters affecting U.S. residences, accounting for billions of dollars in losses to homeowners and renters annually. However, consumers can protect themselves with the right amount and type of insurance coverage.
Standard homeowners and renter’s insurance provide coverage for burst pipes, wind driven rain and damage resulting from ice dams on your roof. Some policies cover sewer and drain backups, but many do not; however, you can purchase a sewer backup rider to a homeowner or renters’ policy for approximately an additional $50 each year, with the policy limits varying depending upon the insurer.
Generally speaking, water that comes from the top down, such as rainfall, is covered by a standard homeowner’s insurance policy, while water that comes from the bottom up, such as an overflowing river, is covered by a separate flood insurance policy. Flood insurance can be purchased from the federal government’s National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), and from some private insurers.
The average flood insurance policy costs $540 a year, according to the NFIP. For homeowners, the maximum amount of coverage available from the NFIP is $250,000 for damages to the home’s structure, and $100,000 for losses to its contents. There is a 30-day waiting period for a flood insurance policy to go into effect. For those who want coverage beyond the limits offered by an NFIP policy, excess flood insurance is available from several private insurance companies.
Properly maintaining a home is one of the best ways to prevent water damage.  A homeowner can prevent water seepage by painting water-sealant around the basement, and avert a sewer backup by installing and maintaining a backwater valve which allows sewage to go out, but not come back in.
We welcome you to contact our office for a no-obligation review of your homeowner insurance needs.

Protect Your Classic Car

3/19/2020

Picture
Depending on the type of car you own and your driving history (tickets and accidents), you are likely insured in the standard or preferred auto market. Both markets cover typical vehicles and operators. This allows insurance companies to use a comfortable set of assumptions about expected losses and repair expenses for developing insurance premiums. However, ownership of a classic or antique auto puts you in a special coverage situation.

Classic and antique cars may have to be covered by a specialty market. A classic auto is commonly considered to be an auto around 15 to 25 years old; while antiques are older than 25 years. Specialty coverage is necessary because standard auto coverage rates are based upon a car losing value each year due to aging and normal vehicle use. The owner of a classic or antique car needs coverage for a vehicle that retains or increases its value.

Specialty car insurers typically base their rates on elements such as:
  • the car's current value (often established by appraisal)
  • any special design or features
  • deductible
  • use (exhibition, touring, parade)
  • availability of storage in a locked garage
  • owner's age (no youthful drivers)
  • whether spare part coverage is included
  • availability of another car for normal vehicle use
  • whether the car's coverage includes automatic increases to account for inflation
If you have a special auto, talk to one of our insurance professionals for advice. We share your concern for having the right type of coverage.
